2025 - March - Motorsport

Hi All

Round 2 of the club championship has been run and won, we had another succesful day at Wanneroo Carco Raceway. 42 entrants were greeted with a beautiful crisp Summer's morning on Sunday 9th March. The weather forecast was perfect for a day at the racetrack, cool early, warming to a fine top of 30c. The track proved to be slick early, the classic Wanneroo sand had blown across the track causing everyone to complain in pitlane after their first runs.
There were some fast times laid down in the sessions before lunch but obviously the track temperature by then had got too high, try as hard as everybody could, not too many went faster in the afternoon. Everyone had plenty of tracktime, the average being 25-30 laps being recorded per competitor, thats a good day no matter how fast or slow you are going. It is a bit daunting to see how fast alot of club members are going these days but for anyone contemplating having a go, please keep in mind, we would never put you out in the same group as the quick cars. All groups are seeded on laptime and there is normally around 8 cars in any one group. This means the reality ontrack is that you are out there on your own, racing the clock. You don't have to worry about being overtaken by a faster car.

We encourage everyone in the club to come and give it a try, start with the driver training session. Its cheap, you get quality instruction from experienced club members who have your enjoyment at the centre of all tuition. Its not about going fast as such, its about learning to drive your car safely at speed in a controlled environment. Why risk going fast on the street when you can come to the track and know you are free to go as fast as you like. You can then stay & watch the day unfold, enjoy the sights & sounds, talk to fellow members in the pitlane and get a feel for the day as an outing to be enjoyed. Then step up and enter the next event and give it a go for real, see how your times compare with similar cars and what modifications if any you might want to do to go faster.

The day ended with a bit of Roll Racing fun, numbers were drawn out of a hat and we lined up on the back straight to then matchup for a rolling start drag race on the pit straight. There was a good size crowd of onlookers watching the battles, we even managed to drag some of the drift event crowd across to watch. There was nothing but bragging rights up for grabs but that didn't stop anyone getting involved. There were some odd matchups but anyone can win given a few driver errors, missed gear changes and the like throwing up some surprise winners. This i think is a good addition to the end of a track day festivities and is something we will definitely do again at future events.

The next motorsport event is round 3 down at Collie Motorplex Sunday 4th May, entry details etc will be emailed out soon and will be posted on the club website. We say it everytime but Collie as a venue is way better fun than Wanneroo, its fast and more challenging, plus its a chance to get away for the weekend. If you have never been, make the effort, you will not be dissapointed.
